A2Z was contracted by Richard E. Poole,
General Contractors, to demolish an old Southern States building
and haul away all materials associated with the demolition.
The property had been purchased by Union Hospital in order
to enlarge their facilities.
Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland began
as a standard demolition project. It turned into a job that
required the expertise of employees in all three divisions
of A2Z Environmental Group--Demolition, Environmental and Roll-off.
After several weeks of demolition work
performed by A2Z’s demolition crew, they noticed that
the soil below the building was omitting an odor of fuel. One
of our environmental specialists was called in to retrieve
samples and send them for analysis. After having the soil tested
it was found to contain numerous contaminated materials. This
turned into an environmental cleanup for A2Z. A second excavator
and a rubber-tired loader were brought in to the jobsite to
quicken the pace of getting rid of the materials. We excavated
the materials and hauled them away with A2Z roll-off trucks.
Approximately two thousand tons of diesel range organics contaminated
soil were removed and disposed of at a local soil recycler.
There was also a hidden pit that needed
to be removed. However the pit was filled with a thick, foul
smelling liquid. The liquid turned out to be blackstrap molasses
that was used as a flavor enhancer for cattle feed. After years
of underground storage, the sugar content of the molasses had
fermented, turning the once sweet molasses into a pungent alcohol-laden
mess. A vacuum truck and tanker were brought in to perform
this work.
Union Hospital and the General Contractor,
Richard E. Poole, while not pleased with all of the extra change
orders, were very pleased with all the hard work, efficiency
and professionalism displayed by A2Z Environmental Group as
a whole. Working together as a team, A2Z was able to complete
the job to everyone’s satisfaction.
