A2Z was contracted by Blast Tech to
demolish a 60,000 square foot building that once housed Federal
offices, such as the FBI and CIS, a Naval investigation service
that predates NCIS. A2Z applied for and obtained all permits
for sediment control, asbestos abatement and demolition. We
began the job by removing all trees and vegetation in order
to install silt and super-silt fence which was required for
the erosion plan.
The building was vacant for several
years before the demolition project began. Being vacant for
so long meant there was an open invitation to vagrants and
pests to call this place home. The vagrants brought in lots
of trash and the pests made their home in the trash. We removed
all the unwanted trash from the building. Tailgate safety meetings
were conducted throughout the demolition project. The building
had to be stripped of interior mechanics before being raised,
to facilitate clean rubble before the concrete crushing phase
could begin. A2Z crews were brought in to start the interior
demolition. The first part of the interior project was to expose
areas containing asbestos. Asbestos abatement was facilitated
by a sub-contractor. The drop ceilings and drywall was stripped
out and the metal framing was recycled. Interior doors and
windows were removed. A building of this size shouldn’t
be stripped out haphazardly. The work was done in an organized
manner, with the work area expanding methodically. The crews
worked from the peripheral edge toward the center. Working
in that manner allowed several crews to work without interference
from each other. Safety always comes first. Once exterior demolition
began, separation of materials became paramount. Every inch
of rebar was cleaned and recycled. All metal window frames,
pipes, conduit, ductwork, light fixtures and all other metals
were recycled.
A geotechnical engineering company was
brought in to inspect the existing foundation to see if it
was compatible with the new building to be erected on the site.
There were inconsistencies, so the foundation was removed.
